Natasha Vest: 'Sleep' and R90 Sleep Profile Consultation review

"6 months ago, a number of stressful events happened and my sleep pattern went out the window. I don't think you understand how critical sleep is until you don't have it and how much havoc it can cause if you lack quality sleep or its disrupted. I struggled to get to bed at night and I was sleeping less with often broken sleep, I was waking in the middle of the night; not being able to return to sleep. I was tired all the time which took its toll on my work and I didn’t have the energy to make changes to improve. Even prior to these stressful events I was always tired and someone who snoozed 5 times every morning struggling to get out of bed, and then rushing to work.

By a stroke of luck, I saw Nicks book ‘Sleep’ in Waterstones. This book has completely changed my life. I learned how to give myself the best opportunity for optimum quality sleep but unexpectedly was reminded why I was so sleep deprived. This book reminds you that we live in a fast-paced world and most of us haven't yet adapted to the change evolution and technology brings. The book gives incredibly practical tips on how to adapt your routine to live your best life with the most energy and how to take more a proactive approach to be in control of the way you approach sleep and rest/recovery and what you can do during the day to feel your best. We all would benefit to stop and take stock of our habits and teach ourselves how to recover properly. I've got strong beliefs that healthy eating, exercise, quality sleep and recovery is the key to our best. We focus and learn on healthy eating and exercise habits but not learning how to sleep!

While I was reading the book, I was already preparing the things needed to change. I wrote down a Sleep and Wake routine, I also bought a Lumie body clock and SAD light for my home. [as shown above. Check them out here] The first night of my routine went perfectly and I had the best sleep I'd had in months! 5 full cycles! The feeling of waking up to light instead of a beeping alarm in the dark was such a peaceful way to start the day. I was awake before the alarm went off and for the first time, I was up and out of bed immediately, and with energy! That feeling is so incredible to start your day with. I use the SAD light as I'm making breakfast for 15 mins, it gives me an extra boost of energy before I head to the gym.

After I made the changes, I had an R90 Sleep Profile Consultation with Nick in person. It was a very valuable conversation that was tailored to assess my individual needs. He taught me a lot about how to use light, regular naps/breaks and tips for how to stick to the R90 program without losing out on fun with friends, family and those last-minute things that pop up from time to time. I'm also ready for a new sleep kit, so I'm buying the Meso mattress along with some other pieces to give myself the best chances of uninterrupted recovery.

Changing habits is never easy. It takes preparation, discipline and work, but the energy and zeal I have in my life now, only a week after my new routine, makes me realise how badly I was torturing myself before with choosing poor habits, some that I wasn't even aware I was doing. If you want to that zest for life feeling back, read the book, make the changes and you'll feel the best you've felt in years! Also share the knowledge or gift the book. I'm so surprised how many of the people in my life were struggling with sleep. It’s one of the best gifts you could give anyone.

Thanks again to yourself and Jessie for all your help. I really value what you do."
